Yara Finland: Impactful safety training online

DIGITAL LEARNING TECHNOLOGY AND CONTENT

Classroom training sessions in an online format

Yara Finland is a subsidiary of Yara International. The main products are fertilizers, industrial chemicals, and environmental protection products. Yara has three production plants in Finland, located in Uusikaupunki, Kokkola and Siilinjärvi. Siilinjärvi is also home to the only phosphate mine in Western Europe and the biggest open-pit mine in Finland. Yara Finland’s Kotkaniemi research farm operates in Vihti. Yara has approximately 900 employees in Finland.
To make their safety training more efficient, Yara was looking for a solution that would enable them to transfer their hundreds of annual classroom training sessions to an online format so that they could be completed independently in a way that would not compromise the impact of the training. MPS’s digital learning tools, the Gimlet LMS learning environment and the Gimlet Composer authoring tool, were a precise match with Yara’s needs, providing a suitable environment for creating e-learning and delivering the training.

Starting point for the project

Safety is a top priority for Yara Finland in all their operations. Yara’s goal is to have zero injuries. Yara’s guiding principle is that all injuries are preventable through the correct preventative measures and continuous improvement of practices. All employees and partners working at Yara’s sites are required to have a valid record of safety training completion and to actively engage in improving safety.

To make their safety training more efficient, Yara was looking for a solution that would enable them to transfer their hundreds of annual classroom training sessions to an online format so that they could be completed independently in a way that would not compromise the impact of the training. The aim was to enable training regardless of time and place, and to provide the opportunity to review content whenever necessary. Yara needed a tool that would support agile content creation and updates, as well as easy verification of the learners’ knowledge and skills.

Solution and implementation

MPS’s digital learning tools, the Gimlet LMS learning environment and the Gimlet Composer authoring tool, were a precise match with Yara’s needs, providing a suitable environment for creating e-learning and delivering the training. Using the Gimlet Composer authoring tool, Yara has provided plant-specific safety induction training and other e-learning courses for various target groups. The training materials are delivered through Gimlet LMS, which also enables Yara to easily monitor training progress and performance.

Yara’s Production Competence Specialist Antti Pasanen reports that the tools have freed up a lot of valuable time for Yara’s own experts, who used to be tied up with frequent classroom instruction. Creating and updating the e-learning courses in-house also saves money.

"When necessary, we are now able to react very quickly to new training needs and to make the training available to our partners efficiently. We are very pleased that the environment was made as user-friendly and clear as possible, and we can continue development as needed,” Pasanen says. “We also appreciate how the collaboration with our partner MPS goes smoothly."

More than 7,000 learners have taken these online training courses, resulting in a significant improvement in safety at Yara’s sites. Yara’s total recordable injuries (TRI) score has gone from 4.5 to 1.8, which means that the number of injuries per year is already down to about one.
